Turkish Culture Tour
the real Istanbul

Understand Türkiye, not just visit it.

For the traveller who doesn't need another monument. A private day inside Turkish culture: breakfast pastries and tea, the craft behind ceramics and carpets, the locals' ferry to Asia, a home-cooked lokanta lunch and the market streets of Kadıköy.

The day at a glance

Your day, stop by stop

Where you go and what you learn.

  1. Met by your guide
    Pickup · 9:00 AM

    Met by your guide

Your English-speaking guide and your driver meet you in your hotel lobby, and the day of Turkish culture starts right there: how people live, eat, work and celebrate.

  2. Poğaça: a soft roll, usually stuffed with cheese or olive

    Poğaça

a soft roll, usually stuffed with cheese or olive

    Stop 01 · 9:30 AM

    Breakfast like a local

Poğaça, açma, simit and börek with a glass of tea at a neighbourhood pastane, the Turkish pastry shop where locals actually start the day. You'll learn why the bakery is the beating heart of every Turkish neighbourhood, how breakfast is a social ritual, and what a typical morning looks like for ordinary Istanbulites.

  3. With the artisans: ceramics and carpets, explained
    Stop 02 · 10:30 AM

With the artisans: ceramics and carpets, explained

You'll be inside the real workshops where the work happens. With carpets, you'll watch one being made on the loom and learn how the colours come from natural materials, what the motifs mean, and how to tell a hand-woven carpet from a mass-produced one. With ceramics, you'll see how a piece is shaped, glazed and fired, and learn to read the motifs you're looking at.

    Not a shopping stop

You won't be sold anything here. This hour is for learning the crafts and nothing else. If shopping is what you're after, we'd genuinely love to help: write to us at hello@britandberat.com and we'll point you to the right places.

  4. The ferry, a daily commute across two continents
    Stop 03 · 12:00 PM

The ferry, a daily commute across two continents

You cross the Bosphorus the way Istanbulites do, on the public ferry, the commute millions of locals make every day. Tea on board, simit for the seagulls, and a guide's-eye view of how this two-continent city actually works.

  5. Lunch at a home-style lokanta
    Stop 04 · 12:30 PM

    Lunch at a home-style lokanta

A lokanta is where Turks eat the food their mothers make, cooked fresh each morning. Your guide walks you through the trays, explains the dishes, and you taste your way through real home cooking while learning what food means in a Turkish family.

  6. Kadıköy, market culture up close
    Stop 05 · 2:00 PM

    Kadıköy, market culture up close

On the Asian side you'll wander Kadıköy's market streets: street food stalls, pickle shops, fishmongers, spice sellers. You'll learn how Istanbulites shop, what they eat on the go, and the unwritten rules of the market. Then the afternoon ferry back, with the light on the water.

  7. The Whirling Dervish ceremony
Optional evening · 5:00 PM or 7:00 PM

    The Whirling Dervish ceremony

If you've added it, your evening continues at Hodjapasha with the sema ceremony, the mesmerising ritual of the Mevlevi order. Your guide will have explained Sufism and Rumi during the day, so when the dervishes turn, you'll understand what you're watching. $75 per person: 5:00 PM on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays, 7:00 PM on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Without the add-on, you're dropped back at your hotel.

What you'll take away

The things you'll actually understand.

  • A local Turkish breakfast: simit, pogaca, borek and tea at a neighbourhood pastane, and what bakeries mean to daily life
  • Time with local artisans: ceramics and carpets explained properly, how they're made, the colours, the motifs. Educational, never a sales pitch
  • The public ferry to the Asian side, the commute millions of locals make every day
  • Lunch at a home-style lokanta, with your guide explaining the dishes
  • Kadıköy's markets and street food culture, how Istanbul actually shops and eats
  • Optional evening add-on: the Whirling Dervish sema ceremony at Hodjapasha

FAQ

Good questions, answered.

Who is this tour for?

Anyone who wants to understand Türkiye, not just see it. It's perfect if you've already done the monuments on another day, or if museums and palaces simply aren't your thing. This is the culture, the food, the crafts and the daily life.

Are there really no entrance fees?

Really. You're exploring the living city: bakeries, workshops, the ferry, a lokanta, the markets. Nothing on this tour charges an entrance fee. You only pay for the food you choose to eat.

How does the Whirling Dervish add-on work?

It's $75 per person on top of the tour. The Hodjapasha ceremony runs at 5:00 PM on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays, and at 7:00 PM on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. On 7:00 PM days we'll suggest starting your tour at 10:00 AM so the day flows perfectly. Occasionally a 5:00 PM slot opens up on a Monday, Wednesday or Friday, and if it does, we'll book that for you instead.

How much should we budget for food?

Breakfast and lunch are at genuinely local spots, so think local prices, a few dollars for breakfast pastries and tea, and a very reasonable home-cooked lunch.

How long is the day?

From a 9:00 AM pickup to mid-afternoon, around 6 hours, or into the early evening if you add the dervish ceremony. The pace is relaxed, with plenty of sitting, tasting and talking.

Will anyone try to sell us carpets?

No. One of our values as a company is to never sell. This part of the day happens inside the real workshops where the work is done, and you're there to learn how carpets and ceramics are made, what the motifs mean and how to tell quality. If you're looking for something specific, we'll help you find it. And if shopping is what you're after, we have dedicated shopping tours, this isn't that tour.

Koray is master of history with heart for Turkiye

"Koray is a master of history! Every date! Every Sultan! His wealth of knowledge is impressive but equally inspiring is his love for this city. He represents this bustling beautiful city with passion and kindness. He was generous with his time. A genuinely nice guy!"

Flawless airport transfer

"Came across Brit and Berat while doing research on Istanbul. Lots of informative posts on Facebook and YouTube. Decided to use their airport transfer services. Their representative was waiting as promised, gave me useful tips, and took me to a nicely customized Mercedes van. Flawless service. No complaints at all. Recommend them highly."

Istanbul Fun

"Our tour was great! Well informed and super safe. The group was thoroughly brought through all of the hot spots in Istanbul with information at every stop. Lots of fun! It lasted roughly four hours. We didn't need the van for our group so the company gave us a free shuttle to the airport, which was super considerate and generous!"
